Today’s post is a bit of a vent. As I was working today I had the TV on in the background (sometimes it gets a little quite working by yourself day in and day out) and I heard Dr. Oz say something that got my blood boiling, or at least simmering.
He was giving a slew of random tips about the holidays and randomly threw this one out:” French Fries are the #1 cause of obesity in America.” He went on to say eating them is responsible for gaining about 3 1/2 pounds year. How dare he!
Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I disagree with him that French fries are not one of the healthiest foods out there. And, I do know his statement was based on research. What upset me so was the fact that he blamed a very serious, complicated, dangerous epidemic on one food.
Most of us know that eating fries a few times a year is not going to lead to an almost 4 pound weight gain or that cutting out fries entirely while laying around popping cookie after cookie (but no fries) will not cause us to miraculously drop those pounds either. But there are many, many Americans who here a phrase like that from a famous Dr on TV and will actually now believe that their French fry consumption is their only problem and if they can fix that, they’ll lose weight and be healthy.
In other words what he did was simply encourage the belief that foods should be labeled as good or bad and the latter should never be eaten. What we all need to understand is that obesity is complex and complicated and involves activity level, portion sizes, where food is prepared, more reliance on processed foods and less on whole foods, and much much more.
So please everyone, when you hear these “shocking” claims about eating, keep in mind, the real keys are moderation in everything and being active regularly.
